Wild Field collection
Wednesday, 25 February 2015
You may recognise the style of the Wild Field collection, as it is designed by Dinara Mirtalipova who designed the quirky Swim Team range of fabric that we wrote about on here last summer.
Wild horses galloping across a summer meadow and wind blowing through your hair as you witness the beauty and color of the fields; these are the images brought to mind by the beautiful new collection.
Windham Fabrics have a free pattern that uses Wild Field on their website here.
This unique and modern collection is available instore and on the website now.

Black & White

Last week we received the sophisticated new collection from Robert Kaufman, designed by, Jennifer Sampou. The monochrome prints (the collection is called "Black and White") are inspired by nature and feature motifs such as feathers and birds.
Jennifer has had a long career in print design, studying at the FIT in New York and University of Vermont, before working for Laura Ashley in the late 1980s. In 1989, she became creative director for P&B textiles, at what must have been a very exciting time in the development of the quilting industry as we know it today. She founded Studio Sampou in 1996.
We love this gorgeous quilt designed by Better Off Thread for Robert Kaufman using the Black & White collection. You can download the free pattern here

Carolyn Friedlander - Doe
Monday, 19 January 2015
We are so pleased to have in stock new fabric designed for Robert Kaufman by the Florida based quilt and textile designer Carolyn Friedlander.
The first range is Doe, which features graphic patterns, inspired by grids and hand drawn lines. The majority of colours are from a natural palette, however you have to see the orange in the flesh to appreciate it - a lovely colour which really "pops". The white tone on tones are really good too. It's great to see this type of fabric featuring a modern print.
Architextures by Carolyn Friedlander
The second range we have had delivered is actually a repeat of her first popular line, Architextures. This features a cross hatch print in fresh, modern colours, and is very popular with our quilters as a modern blender.
You can buy the fabrics on our website here and read more about Carolyn on her website here.
Lotta Jansdotter - Follie Now In!
Monday, 12 January 2015
Hotly anticipated here at Brighton Sewing Centre, Follie (Lotta Jansdotter’s new collection for Windham Fabrics) is now in the shop and on the website.
This is the fourth collection that we have stocked, and Follie features fuchsia stripes, oversized checks and taupe woodcut nature prints, all designed in her scaled back and considered aesthetic.
See new collection Follie here
In case you aren’t familiarwith Lotta’s work, she’s a Scandinavian born textile designer, who works from her studio in Brooklyn, NYC. The studio is open on specific days throughout the year, advertised on the website (in case you are lucky enough to find yourself in the neighbourhood!). She also runs print workshops, in the USA and Sweden.
Windham Fabrics say of her work:
"Lotta Jansdotter’s designs are like little plants working their way through cracks in the sidewalk. Things of simple beauty that bring relief to the urban landscape. Lotta’s work is about her life, and life is her inspiration. Her genius lies in exploring the beauty of everyday things.
Lotta ‘s aesthetic is deeply rooted in the Scandinavian landscape. She was born in 1971 on Aland, a small group of islands in archipelago between Sweden and Finland. Her Swedish heritage is also apparent in her pragmatic and self-sufficient approach to design. Lotta takes the basic craft skills she learned as a child, such as potato printmaking and simple sewing, and stretches them into sophisticated tools.”
We think Follie is the perfect collection for making items for the home, clothing – and quilts. The latter which we are already working on...

Apartment Therapy interviewed her last year. The video is on their website here.

Wendy Kendall is a UK designer based in Staffordshire, she has graphical, clean approach that mixes playful patterns/textures with quirky handrawn outlines. She loves bold colours against bright whites and particularly enjoys creating designs for children.
Wendy Kendall was one of the first designers for Dashwood Studio, her first range, Petite Street, was so well received they had to re-print it again and again!

New range - Retro Orchard
We're excited to say her new range Retro Orchard has just arrived in the shop!
Dashwood Studio liked the main fruit, melon and floral print so Wendy then worked on building a story around those designs by adding the orchard, seedling and stripe print on contrasting backgrounds.
These bold fruit shapes work really well on the crisp white background and the dotty Flurry Plum makes a great edging contrast.
My favourite thing about this range, that may not come across in the photographs, is the unusual use of colour! Every shade used is unique and unusual but it makes my heart sing as it sits so nicely together, I want to use them all together in a quilt so I can enjoy them and not miss out, it's real colour therapy - Makes me happy!
If you'd like a set of small samples so you can see for yourself email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll send you a set to make your day! Put RETRO ORCHARD in the subject field and send your name and address so we know what to do.

Dinara Mirtalipova’s work is unique and on-trend, with a crafty, homemade aesthetic that harkens back to the decade of the 1970’s, when Dinara herself was a small child who liked to “doodle”.
She has since graduated from doodler to consummate artist and entrepreneur, and she’s watching her client list constantly grow to include: Alphabet Bags, Disney Hyperion, Johnson & Johnson, Kleenex, The Land of Nod (a division of Crate & Barrel), Oh So Beautiful Paper, and Windham Fabrics.
From small iPhone cases and Christmas ornaments to floor rugs and life-sized plush characters, Dinara’s folksy, hand-crafted vision brings heart and whimsy to a growing array of inspired products.
Swim Team is Dinara's first collection with Windham Fabrics.
This delightful summer group by new Windham designer, Dinara Mirtalipova, features ladies sunbathing on the beach and swimming underwater with fish. Adorable complementary patterns of beach accessories, flips flops, and underwater scenes fill out this unique new collection.
Dinara's thoughtful illustrations frequently whisk you away to magical places--- Swim Team is no exception with its 50's bathing suits and cat's eye sunglasses. The main colors of blue and gray will cool you off in the hot days of summer. Will you make a skirt, a beach bag or a picnic blanket?
